If you know me, you know I have a genuine curiosity around people and their businesses, especially when I find someone doing something truly unique. Like Christine Springer, who does forensic loan audits; or Cathy Compton, a Wellness Coach; or Michelle Dill who owns an auto repossession company.
I was surprised to meet Cem Eren who does Hydrostatic Body Fat Testing and Rick Van Hasselt of HouseSeats.com an entertainment subscription company. I was fascinated when I spoke to Bill Bethauser of www.auctionANDapparisals.com, and the stories of how various artwork has come into being at BeDazzled Gallery owned by Steve Arkawi is always intriguing.
Yes, there are plenty of new, interesting and one of a kind companies out there and companies who have a unique approach to how they position themselves in the market place.
However, nothing got me thinking more than the paper sign posted at the corner of 45th Ave and Thomas – it simply said. “Top 50” Prison Shuttle and had a phone number.
At first the “Top 50” part really had me confused, after all there couldn’t be 50 prisons in Arizona, or could there?
Upon doing some research I found there are some 200 prisons in the state including Federal penitentiaries, local city and county jails, adult correction centers and juvenile facilities. Wow, who knew?
I must say given the niche market, running a prison shuttle service, certainly seems like a low overhead, high return little business that is akin to the blue Super Shuttles for airports without the expectations of courtesy or comfort as with airport shuttles.
I can only speculate on the Prison Shuttle’s other marketing efforts. However, given the type of business, I bet those plain white signs and referrals are doing the trick and keeping the shuttle running for every visitor’s day, parole hearing or other events experienced by the incarcerated.
A unique business may be waiting for you. And if you already have a unique business, I want to know about it!
